Double Gold, Silver and Bronze for Shawnigan

The Shawnigan Lake School rowing crews captured double medals for gold, silver and bronze at the 2011 Canadian Secondary School Rowing Championships (C.S.S.R.A.) in St Catharines, Ontario from June 3 to 5th.

Shawnigan Lake School tied for 5th place in the overall C.S.S.R.A. point standings despite having less points-per-entry than some of the other schools in the top four positions. In total Shawnigan entered eight boats in races, seven of which qualified for the finals and six boat rowing away with medals.

Picking up the first gold medal for Shawnigan were the Senior Boys Lightweight Eight that won a dramatic race by a 0.82 margin of a second. The second gold went to the Senior Boys Lightweight Pair Saeed N. and Caleb M., who crossed the finish line in 7:10.50 minutes with a comfortable 8.44 second lead on the second place team. Two days after the closing of the C.S.S.R.A. Saeed and Caleb claimed a convincing first place finish at the CanAmMex Trials, an event used for Junior National Team selection. The formidable grade 12 duo has been undefeated this rowing season and will attempt to extend their winning streak at the Canadian Henley Regatta August 2nd to 7th, also in St Catharines, one of the most sought after medals in the North American Rowing circuit.

Capturing a comfortable silver medal finish in the Senior boys Heavyweight Pair category was the Lightweight duo Graham D. and Jordan J., who crossed the finish line in 7:15.69 minutes, a full 6 seconds ahead of the third place team. The Junior Girls Lightweight Four team also had a strong showing to claim a silver medal finish, missing gold by a slim 1.32 seconds. The four members of the Junior Girls Lightweight crew together with four other junior classmates also picked up a bronze medal in the Junior Girls Eight as the fastest Canadian boat in the event with a 7:18.96 finish. Similarly, the Senior Girls Eight rowed to a dramatic bronze medal finish as the fastest Canadian boat in their event, narrowly missing the silver medal by only 0.93 of a second.

Finishing just outside of the medal standings in fourth place was the Senior Girls Lightweight Four consisting entirely of grade 11 students, who will all be returning to Shawnigan for another attempt at the championship title next year.

Head of Rowing at Shawnigan and Olympic gold medal winner Kyle Hamilton said, "We're extremely proud of all our crews for their top performances in all the events. Particularly encouraging is the medal results despite the young athletes in those events. A lot of these athletes still have another year to develop in their age division and can look forward to building on their success in the up-coming years. Other students are going on to challenging rowing careers at top universities and with national team."
