Shawnigan Students Come Up Big at Junior Open

Congratulations to Brynn D. and Justin M. on winning their respective Girls' and Boys' Open divisions at the Shawnigan Lake Junior Open Squash Tournament hosted by the School from the September 16-18th. Through their efforts against some of the top players in BC, Shawnigan will be home to the Monk Office Cup and the Gudewill Cup for the next year.

Players came from Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland, Washington and Alberta, and there was some exceptional talent on display. Other notable Shawnigan performances came from Sarah P., Cade S., Tenkai T., Jack X., Nick C., Angelo A. Not to be outdone, future SLS players Barbara, Amelia, Jamie and Kathleen showed their skills and potential in the Novice Girls' Division. Mention should also be made of Rhys B. who played very well and shows great promise for the future.

The School would like to thank our generous sponsors, who helped to make the tournament such a success. Thanks also to the support of the parents who came out to watch.

We were honoured to have John Hungerford '70 (Copeman's) here to make the presentations at the conclusion of the tournament. John, an accomplished multi-sport athlete while at Shawnigan, went on to excel in squash, and is a member of the Elite Jester's international organization of squash players and supporters.

The level of squash at Shawnigan continues to improve with international coach, Mike Johnson at the helm, ably assisted by Eric Venables and volunteer Leonie, a highly regarded WSPA player.
This successful start to the year augurs well for the remainder of the season.
